In this talk I will present a probabilistic method of deriving the correct cube-root scaling of the flux and of the fluctuations of second class particles in the Hammersley process. These rigorous methods are based on intuitive ideas and require almost no heavy technical tools or very specific constructions only available in the Hammersley process, in contrast to the work of Baik, Deift and Johansson or the work of Ferrari and Spohn. We were in fact able to use similar ideas for TASEP, to show the cube root behaviour in that process, which I will also try to show in this talk. Finally I wish to point out that Timo Seppalainen and Marton Balazs were able to use these ideas to prove cube root asymptotics for the ASEP case, for which no analytical methods are known. (This is joint work with Piet Groeneboom and with Timo Seppalainen and Marton Balazs).
